now that I've got some cash, and can't seem to find an answer to this question ANYWHERE, do these have a hard bypass that can be activated by a standard footswitch as opposed to a special one? If so, is it a system that needs a non-latching footswitch or a direct system that needs a regular footswitch?

Also, having had VERY limited experience with these, how is the noise gate? I'll be replacing my DBX 266XL Gate/compressor with this, and a good noise gate is top priority.

IIRC bypass is a function that can be MIDI switched. There is no way of externally controlling the unit without MIDI.

I use the gate all the time, but to me, a gate is a gate. I set it just high enough to keep my rig from humming, and no more. I do all of my muting and feedback control with my hands.

there is an "external control" that can be set to any function and can be a standard latching switch or a momentary
