What're everyone's favourite short horror stories? Any era will do!
Here's a list of a few of mine...
'The Girl With The Hungry Eyes': Fritz Leiber
'So Runs The World Away': Caitlin R. Kiernan (plus anything from her 'Alabaster' sequence)
'The Willows': Algernon Blackwood
'A School Story': MR James (this really creeped me out when I was little!)
'Optional Music For Voice And Piano': Poppy Z. Brite
'In The Court of the Dragon': Robert W. Chambers
'His Shadow Shall Rise To A Higher House' and 'The Red Tower': Thomas Ligotti
I could go on forever, but that'll do for a start!
Ok, the fact that YOU of all people managed to make a list of "short horror stories" without even mentioning Poe blows my mind.
Not a traditional "horror" story, but there's still something ethereal and unsettling about it, so let's add Borges' "The Circular Ruins"
Also, I can't find the text online, but Kelly Link's "Stone Animals" rules.
