i've been hooked to everything "hell"-themed since...hmm, well, feels like forever, but recently i had some "discussions" (you know - the ones after a few beers) - ala "if hell would exist, what would it look like?"-etc.blabla...and we then came to the point of just how MANY different opinions there are out there, what "hell" really is, and then somewhere ended up in movies that no only "thematize" but also actually visualize hell.
i went through my DVDs (and even old VHS) and just found a few, maybe some of you can recommend some more - or want to discuss some of them, f.e. good/bad implementation...the different ideas of what "hell" is (getting torured 24/7 vs. relive your ultimate sin over and over again vs...)
.) L'Inferno - Dantes Inferno
well - you cant talk about hell without considering Dante. yes, there is an adaption of the book. but dont expect too much, as the movie is from 1910 (round about), and its of course a silent film, but if you are not all about "zomg teh special effectz!", you could actually enjoy this. i did. its recently been finally released on DVD and worth a watch, not only for "hell"-interests, also for general movie-interested people as i think, that considering the time and the funds/tools/.. available back then - this is an amazing piece of art!
.) Event Horizon
you dont see that much (afaik - the movie has been cut down by almost half an hour and they deleted almost all hell/gore scenes...too bad) - but what you see and know is actually pretty much badass, and hell-worthy.
"eyes...where we are going we wont need eyes.."
what can i say...i love Hellraiser. i have to admit icame across the Hellraiser series pretty late - i was 12 or 13 i think, and Motörhead did the soundtrack to part III, and i just found my love for heavy metal...well, the song still is one of my all-time-favourites, and the movie is too! Parts 1 and 2 especcially are totally amazing, and the idea of what the hell and its demons could be is absolutely gold!
the comic-adaption. well, this is how it should NOT be done...damn...
agian comic-adaption, but dimensions better than Spawn..actually the "hell"-setting was pretty cool.
.) Supernatural (series)
you get a few short images and later a lot of ideas about what hell looks like and the "daily schedule"...i liked this ideas a lot (alot).
.) Project Brainstorm
well, hard to describe - hell isnt really thematized, but for a few seconds you get a look at it, and its actually looking really good, but i felt it was kinda not really fitting into the rest of the movie...good visualization nonetheless.
EDIT: i have - not so long ago - also seen a taiwanese or thai (cant remember) B-movie, pretty low budget, kind of a Dante-ripoff, but more modern - about a few kids an an adult "dying" at a car crash, going to hell, trying to get out. There were some pretty good ideas in it, but the overall "trash"-factor was just too big...
