    Jack Ass sues Viacom

No seriously some guy named Jack Ass is suing Viacom.

A Montana man named Jack Ass has sued MTV's parent company, accusing the music channel of "plagiarizing" and "defaming" his good name in connection with the show "Jackass."

The 44-year-old Ass, who legally changed his name from Bob Craft in 1997, is seeking at least $10 million from Viacom, which Ass contends is "liable for injury to a reputation I have built and defamation of character I have created."

He'll get nowhere with this. The problem with intellectual property law is that you have to vigorously defend it. Letting it go for eleven years demonstrates a implied consent to the use of the name Jackass. Furthermore, "jackass" is a common colloquialism, which is just about impossible to copyright--notice that the ™ or do not appear next to the word "Jackass" in any of the official press releases, websites, and advertising literature, ostensibly because MTV couldn't copyright it.

Hilarious. I think this is being reported just because of how ridiculous it is. That's like having a guy named "Fan Tastic" and him suing a company for making a movie called "Fastastic!" It's a common English word... and even if it was a name. Let's say you made a movie called "Bob Springfield" and then a guy named Bob Springfield sued you... he would still lose.

That would make you have to pay MTV money since their TV show was named before you.
