I've been enjoying the Laundry books by Charles Stross.
Too much focus leads to tunnel vision
Too much faith leads to religion
Too much knowledge leads to confusion
Too many guitar lessons lead to jazz-fusion

If you like _really_ hard sci-fi, check out Greg Egan.

"A fire upon the deep" and "A deepness in the sky" from Vinge.

Also - anything from Daniel Suarez, all three of his books are great

    Brian Lumley- Necroscope series.
And his Vampire world trilogy are fucking epic.
He also has some other books worth reading.
His Titus Crow stories are quite good as well.
