1. Mickey Rourke is just phenomenal in this movie. One of the best performances I've ever seen. People say this is the resurrection of Mickey Rourke, and I can see it. The parallels with his own life, and he he honestly and transparently conveys them to the character of Randy the Ram is just amazing. The closest thing I can think of is Daniel Day Lewis in 'There Will Be Blood.' (Or maybe, in all honesty, Wall-E.) Powerful.
2. Marisa Tomei... manages to look fading, touching, and yet, amazingly hot (she's a stripper) at the same time. I wasn't sure if I wanted a kleenex for my tears, or for uh... other reasons. She makes you need to go take a number 3.
Mickey and Marisa are both nominated for Golden Globes for this, deservedly so. Plus, Bruce Springsteen has a song they play at the end credits also nominated, and again, rightfully so. It's a terrific song, about a 1 trick pony, which is an allegory for Randy the character.
This movie is really touching. Plus, if you're a wrestling fan like me or Ohio Eric, it's even better, because this is really true to the history and practice of professional wrestling.
Sadly it's only playing select theaters and no theaters near me have been selected.
