    So, PS is overkill. I don't really need all that jazz

    What's a solid paint program? I'll mostly use it for basic image editing: cropping, fixing colors, brightness, contrast, etc.

    Free is a bonus, but I'm willing to pay (!) for something that works well.

    Photoshop Elements is a stripped down version (aka Photoshop LE). See if that fancies ya. Corel Paint (or something like that) is 2nd to Photoshop, so that might be too many features.

    Seashore is free, and does the basics, based upon GIMP but without trying to have more features than Photoshop.
