Remember that 90% of wow was borrowed form other games (Mainly Asherons call and EQ) Blizz merely polished things and streamlined things a bit .
WHat Trion have done with this game is include all of the things in MMOs that work well and expanded upon them to create a polished. fun product.
This Game was more stable in Early beta than any other AAA on the market now (including WOW).
So we have quests, we have pvp, we have dungeons and raid content in a game that runs great and looks good to boot. Most MMO companys would have stopped there and published.
What Rift does differently is 2 different things. First the actual Rifts themselves - these things are awesome! They erupt elite mobs (Sort of similar to public quests in Warhammer) but if the rifts are not taken out by players they begin to spawn invasions that send hordes of mobs to quest hubs to kill all of the npcs there and take over the hubs (during full blown invasion events these things are all over the zone).
The second part is the ascended soul system.
You have your 4 class archtypes Warrior, mage, cleric, rouge but each calling has 9 different souls. You can combine any 3 souls (and have 4 combination's of souls) so you could be a cleric and have a DPS build, a main healing build, a tank build and one other build to make any kind of character you would want. You can switch builds almost instantly (out of combat) I mean Rouges in this game can tank, Mages can heal, Warriors can equal rouge DPS.
