I've been mulling over the idea of selling my Mac Mini and old (2006) iMac and getting one of the new 17" Core i7 MacBook Pros.
So, right now I'm experimenting with my 17" HP laptop driving a 24" external monitor. It seems pretty nice, but I have never had a laptop as my main computer before.
To the guys that use this setup: How do you handle docking with an MBP? Is it usually connected to everything like printers and hard drives? How often do you do TimeMachine backups with it? Have you found it the best to plug everything into a USB hub and just connect the hub to the laptop? Do you ever wish you had a full desktop computer?
These questions are kind of silly, but I'd like to hear what you guys think of these setups. My Mac Mini is a glorified laptop after all, and the MBPs are more powerful, and they are portable. I'd just kind of uncomfortable with the idea of using the laptop as my one and only computer, and at the same time...I see the merits of it.
So...yeah....how does this kind of setup work for you?
I've been thinking of getting one of these..
In your case, you could keep all the externals (monitor, hard drive, printer, etc) plugged into the dock, and then when you want to connect your macbook to all of it, just close it and slide it in. (giggidy)
It would also keep that monster of a 17" laptop out of the way.
