Well, other than staying in Japan, my roof leaking from the apartment upstairs, and various other issues, my PS3 broke today. It got the blinking red light.
What's really annoying is that I can't get the game I was playing out. It starts out green, gets greener, and then just starts blinking red. If I have to buy a new PS3, then I'll buy a new PS3, but I need to get the Batman: Arkham City disk out and, if the console is unsalvagable, I still need to get the data on the HDD off so I can use it on a new PS3. :P
When my Xbox 360 broke, I could at least get the disk out. I was beginning to think my PS3 would never break since I've had it since 2007 (it was the 20GB model with the PS2 emotion chip in it).
i think if you power it off at the switch on the back then hold the eject button in and power it back on with the eject button held in still it will start up and make a jet engine type sound and eject the disc.
This is what i got told to do by sony when my ps3 broke and it did work. Im not sure if that was the exact procedure though.
fwiw i had to pay around £130 to get a replacement from sony. Nowadays i wouldn't bother as you can get them new here for £150
