Hey guys, I have two 2GB DDR2 PC2-6400 ram sticks in my computer, and I want to upgrade my ram capacity.
I have two more empty slots.
The question I have is, can I buy one 8 gig stick, or do all the sticks have to be the same size? Would I just have to buy 2 more 2 gig sticks.
Also, If I bought an 8 gig stick, I would be at 12 gigs. Should I update in the 2^(n) format, since that is how bits work? In that case, I would either need 8 or 16 gigs, not 12.
You would want to buy your ram in pairs, not in singles, since your motherboard is dual-channel. Best performance will be had in pairs. Buy a pair of 4gb sticks or a pair of 8gb sticks. The exponential stuff doesn't matter. I'm running 12gb in my PC right now, have 2 2gb sticks and 2 4gb sticks. Works pretty well.
