What are some of the more unique/innovative games you guys can recommend that are semi-current?
Portal 1 and 2: Top spot for me, since it completely turned the corner on what a puzzle game should be. It's one game that absolutely everyone should play, even if they only play shooters, or sports games, or puzzle games. It's brilliant.
Heavy Rain: One of the best reasons to own a PS3, simply because it's such a different gaming experience. It's like playing through a really fucking awesome thriller/drama film. It's the kind of game you could watch someone else play for hours. Awesome story, and just really well done.
Alan Wake: Technically a shooter, but the way they portrayed it with the whole walking-through-your-own-novel plotline and having the flashlight be your best weapon is clever as hell. It may not have the best mechanics, and the plot is a little cheesy at times, but it's definitely unique and I am always checking for new DLC "chapters" for it.
What are your must-plays?
-Terraria: 2d Minecraft-ish building mechanics (but so much more) + crazy boss battles, item searching, with epic, hostile worlds and crazy loot.
-Blue Libra: Real-time strategy on Mac and iPad, but with simple yet shockingly challenging gameplay and an incredibly simple control system.
-Desktop Dungeons: Incredibly challenging little roguelike dungeon crawl, with some unique mechanics that make for really tough strategic decisions and a lot of planning.
-Space Pirates and Zombies (SPAZ) - arcadey top-down space shooter with RPG-like depth and customization.
-(currently in alpha) Starfarer - hardcore fleet command and top-down "realistic" space shooter/fleet tactics game.
