I need another external hard drive because I do not have any of my music files backed up, only saved to this external. Currently I'm using a Lacie Rugged tripple 3.0 usb, 500GB HD, with 5400 rpms, and recording music using a mac mini 10.6 OSX. My question is, is it worthwhile buying another Lacie rugged? I mean, they seem expensive and I'm not sure if they're really worth more than a brand like western digital. I bought the Lacie on impulse a few years ago, without really knowing what sort of external HD options there are. I bought one so I could store my music recording files off of the computers internal HD, so I can keep the internal HD as clean as possible, to maximize the computers speed while recording/ mixing.
My exact questions are:
What specs should I look for in an external HD that will be used for storing project files and mixes?
Are there any brands that are more known for quality than others?
Also, I have already read a few reviews on other companies external HDs on newegg, but as I already stated, I'm not really sure if there are any specs that I should be looking for, other than the amount of memory on the external. Some feedback and guidance would be greatly appreciated please.
I'd personally recommend using your current drive as a backup drive and buy something 7200rpm and Firewire to actually work from, as it'll cut down on latency issues.
