I figured there are enough computer guys here that someone would figure out what I'm talking about
I have an external that I keep all of my media on. I keep the stuff I access more frequently, or stuff that I want another backup of on my laptop as well (and yes, I back the external up as well.) Every two weeks or so, I'll hook up the external and move any new media over to it. Because I don't have a desk and I use a laptop, I don't leave the drive plugged in or set up, and just set it up and plug it in when I need to move stuff on or off of it.
The problem I'm running into is that I can't always remember what is on the external. I won't remember if I have a certain album, or movie, or pdf. Is there a way to create a searchable directory image of a drive and all of it's folder trees and files to use when the drive isn't plugged in? That way I could have that on my laptop to search, and then update it when I add new media to the external. Am I making any sense at all?
