I listen to gaming podcasts all day long at work. Joystiq, Rooster Teeth(the patch), Polygon, Rebel FM, ect ect...
And they all had the same sentiment. The game looks great they all said, but the fear that the game gives you goes into frusteration very quickly because the alien is tethered to you through out most of the game to the point that it wears out the tension within the first hour of a 22 hour campaign.
They also said they 22 hour campaign is brutal to endure. 22 hours of no combat. Basically most of them said it was more like 12 hours of hiding in a locker while the alien outside that is tethered to you just wont leave past a hundred feet our so.
Another comment I kept hearing is that interacting with things was laggy and hard to disengage from (such as a useing a computer) and that many times the reviewers were killed because of stupid reasons such as not backing away from a computer fast enough when it should have been an instant thing to back away from a computer.
The other comment I kept hearing is that Amanda Riply(the character you play in the game)encounters the alien more in this game than the movies Ripley encounters the alien over the course of the movie franchise. The fear and tension needs to be used more sparingly. Its a onetrick pony.
So point being, while it looks great and the atmosphere is there, apparently the gameplay is boreing with little substance besides hiding in a locker.
I dont put all my faith in reviews, but IGN and Polygon nail it practically every time IMO.
