It seems they finally realized it was an unwise idea to force adoption of Google+.
Do you remember when Google+ was a novelty and people were practically begging for an invitation to sign up?
I think Google has grown too big, too powerful, and- most importantly- too intrusive. Everyone deserves an internet experience that doesn't make them feel like a product every step of the way, unlike what Google and other mega-corporations have seduced the masses into believing.
