So, I'm running an old (late-2009) iMac, which I had never upgraded the OS on. The reason being, Digidesign fucking us over. The MBox2 stopped being fully supported before Mavericks came out and the free OSX updates started. Add to that, I'm running Pro Tools 8 and haven't been able to afford to update that either, and it's also not supported after Mavericks.
Lately, I've been feeling how out of date my OS is more and more. Finally, Steam stopped supporting OSX 10.6.8, so now I can't open the client and run my games. It just crashes on startup, and there's no way to roll back the Steam update. They're mandatory. I found this out after buying Antichamber during the Steam sale from my phone, and trying to play it when I got home.
So I decide, I have tax money coming, I'll just have to upgrade my recording set up, and update to El Capitan. I decided to do the OS update today, to see if I could get by with a workaround for one of my interfaces, or go buy one on sale tomorrow.
During install, it tells me that disk repair failed. Restarting the install results in the same thing every time. Great, my hard drive is probably dying. That's more money to spend. At least I can boot up in Recovery mode and try to repair the disk that way first. No, wait, that requires the disk that came with my iMac when I bought it. I don't know where that is. Found the one for my old iBook G4, though.
On top of this, I've been having issues with my screen flickering/glitching and then freezing up, along with program/system crashes related to video and other graphics for the last year-ish, which leads me to believe that my video card may be going as well.
So, how fucked am I? Is this going to be an expensive repair (with an attempt to recover files from my old hard drive)? Is it going to be bad enough that I should just cut my losses and replace the whole damn thing?
tl;dr - Steam sale fucked my iMac.
I just went they this 6 months ago with my gf late 2009 imac. The hd shit the bed basically.
We were assiredby geek squad they could replace it. Well after they fucked it up, they sent it to one of their qualified repair techs who dropped it and ruined it beyond repair. Best buy issued us a full refund for the computer we bought there years ago.
Went spent it on all sorts of shit.
I just got her a 2011 Mac mini on Craigslist instead, which are awesome because you can add a ssd in addition to the stock drive.
Fwiw, apple won't work on anything that old. So unless you're pretty damn handy or know someone you trust, the hd is kinda tricky to swap on those
