I think most people use Ventrilo. We used that here with our various (dodgy) servers.

I've been reading the tea leaves, and you're 100% right. The CEO (Carl) gave a rather definitive quote on the Minecraft Monday Show:

regarding the modding API, and there's ample evidence of initial support in the 1.1 release. (a new packet type [0xFA] for sending plugin messages/data, and an official method for registering client/server mods.) You can read more at Minecraft Plugin Channels + Messaging - Dinnerblog

Hey… gotta ease me into it. Start with listening to the music, then maybe a concert, followed by a starter guitar with lessons.
