In Tokyo, I have ZERO sympathy for the victim. In fact, I would want to bring them back to life just so I could beat them silly. For their families, I cannot express how much sympathy I have. Killing yourself on a train in Tokyo is the cruelest thing you could do to your family -- because they will have to pay tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars to the train company to make up for the damage caused to the trains and the tracks, the cost of clean-up, the money lost through refunds to customers, and the money lost through lost business/etc. You'd have to really have it in for your family to kill yourself on a train.
(I can have sympathy for some people who commit suicide, but not for people who commit suicides in front of: trains, subways, buses, or traffic).
