Mike Portnoy Named in Top 50 Drummers of All Time | Roadunner Records News

He's a great drummer, but 5th best?? I would put him somewhere in the 20's.

Heh, I'd put him around 1 or 2.

Edit: I don't get the Bonham love, honestly. He wasn't awful by any stretch, but #1? No fuckin' way. Polls like that always fag up the top spots with popular/dead/legendary guys. I wonder where Thomas Haake landed on that list.

Edit: And where's Danny Carey?

And where's Rickki Rockett??

Seriously though, how could Danny Carey not be on this list?

Clearly these things are the top 50 most popular drumbers, not the 50 best.

I think the Bonham hype is totally justified. While his licks today are fairly easy as opposed to the shit metal drummers are doing now, he was a pioneer in hard rock drumming. No Bonham means no dudes like Haake or Portnoy in the same way that No Van Halen means no shred guitar

Being a pioneer, though, does not make you the best.

This kid:

Is better than all 3 of the top 3 on that list.

I don't get the Bonham thing just as much as I don't get the Jimmy Page thing. IMO, he's one of the most overrated guitar players, ever!
