Some really interesting thoughts on improvisation here...
I agree wholeheartedly with his approach to improvisation. The greatest improvisers have always applied that approach, I think. Coltrane developed a tremendously complex vocabulary and proceeded to blow it up and travel into freer territories.
Guys like McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea let their playing flow where it will, rather than turning it into an academic exercise. Improvising guitarists from the jazz tradition often seem afraid to follow that approach, and I speculate that it's because of jazz guitar's roots in the more "egghead" cool jazz scene.
