Too many bands these days are "full on all of the time."
This one's from before an era when dynamics was more than just a clean intro or a short two-measure quiet section before the screaming starts again
Very little of this push-pull gradual buildup/breakdown stuff gets heard these days.
(I really just needed an excuse to post this video, I love this song )
I agree 100%.
It's not just in the overall songwriting/arranging dynamic, either. Excessive and predictable guitar layering is at least partly to blame. The more layers you add, the more of each guitar track's individual dynamics get hidden. It all starts to sound like an indistinguishable "Wall of Recto." And then, of course, the whole thing is compressed to shit in the mixing and/or mastering stages.
Light and shade aren't that interesting without a little dusk in between them.
