So, I wrote and recorded a song today, and it features a little lead break coming out of the first chorus into the second verse, and listening back to it now that it's mixed and finished, I realized that my lead style still has a strong influence from Jeff Martin of The Tea Party all over it
To be fair, The Tea Party was my first big "guitar" band, they were the band that made me want to learn to play and were my gateway drug into all kinds of other music. I still love all their albums (even the one Bob Rock shit all over), it's just interesting because people keep telling me that they can hear a Tea Party influence in my music, and tonight's the first time I really heard it
So, to open discussion:
Do you still hear any influence from your early guitar heros in your playing?
Definitely. Theres a lot of old Killswitch Engage (Alive or Just Breathing basically taught me how to play guitar) which is funny because i don't think we sound anything like them. Just in chord shapes, how I look at scales and shapes and riff structure. Of my more recent influences (I don't really play to music aymore, I just listen to it - I certainly don't learn songs like I used to) there is a lot of From A Second Story Window's album Delenda in my song structure and how I want things to sound - I always liked how they didn't ever repeat riffs but songs still had definite hooks and flow and progression, and I loved the concept behind the album and how the guitars and vocals fitted to that vision, and it is something I strive towards in my compositions.
Beyond that there isn't much - I'm not a very gifted guitarist, I rarely practice or record these days, I just bang out songs when the mood takes me. I much prefer writing with my band to my own, as there is a lot more influences to stir the pot with. One thing I have noticed is we sound quite similar to Between The Buried and Me - a band I've listened to, but not a lot, certainly not a band I've ever tried to sound like or emulate.
I do sometimes go after interesting techniques players use - the chaps from Ion Dissonance I went through a phase of trying to understand (I even went as far as retuning my 7 to ID tuning) and I took a lot from that - dischordance, time signatures and that innovative pick scrape thing they do in The Surge etc.
In short, yes.
