So I've read about the trick where you record your music or include sheet music in a package and mail it to yourself via certified mail to establish that on the date of processing at the Post Office, you'd declared your music copyrighted. I'm not really sure if this is the real deal or legitimate or anything, so I'm looking for advice.
My band has some songs recorded (we're going to re-record) and when we do, we want to sent some stuff out to local labels and promoters, etc. How paranoid should we be that someone is going to rip us off, and what should we do about it? We've already sold some demo discs at a show, and the music is available on the Internet.
I've heard the mailing thing too from two of my guitar teachers. Kinda skeptical about it as well. I am pretty sure if you publish to iTunes or CDBaby, you have a copyright to your music. I haven't looked into past that though.
