Just got back from the Sword/Lamb of God/Metallica show.
The Sword was the surprise of the night... very tight, cool riffs, really liked them. Going to pick up a CD for sure.
Lamb of God had crap sound and were not very tight, which was practically a 180 from the last show I saw them at (their headlining tour with Trivium, Machine Head, and Gojira). The guitars were overbearing, Randy was almost inaudible, and only Chris's snare drum could be heard. The overheads were totally lost, the toms were just weak little "plinks" so the fill in Ruin didn't sound like much.. the new song was cool though. More simplistic seeming than their old stuff, but that could be because the whole band eventually just sounded like an indistinct wash of distortion to me.
Then came Metallica... played a ton of new shit. Heard played mixed in with old Justice stuff, you can tell that the new stuff is basically arranged exactly the same as all their old "complicated" stuff with different riffs retrofit to it. They played maybe three tight songs? Then came One and some of the shittiest double kick work I have ever heard... Lars sounded like he had just got his first set of double kick pedals.
Kirk had four wah pedals on the stage that we could see, and maybe more we couldn't. His solos weren't bad for the most part in the song, except whenever he changed something up it was for the worse.. turning some cool parts into just "what the fuck?" moments. James sounded pretty good, but the whole night took a nose dive about halfway through
They couldn't play Master of Puppets right - they could have been kids from a guitar store on stage for all I could tell. Lars never figured out his double kick, by the end of Master of Puppets everyone was out of time with each other (sounded like James' constant downpicking seized up his wrist). I really wanted to hear Battery and Blackened but after how bad most of their other classics had been fucked up, me and my buddies left before the encore.
Was the ticket worth $80cad? Fuck no. I feel incredibly ripped off. For $40 I would still feel ripped off if Metallica was there on there on. The stage was cool, nice pyrotechnics, nice lasers, but didn't make up for how shit their performances were.
And Lars was cruising around like a douche all night. At the end of EVERY song, he would jump up and walk to the other side of his drum kit while hitting cymbals.. so I guess that is his only move. Most of his parts were dumbed down and those that weren't, were played very poorly. He walked around and waved on the stage more than most lead singers do.
So, this latest tour is a massive fail. Avoid at all costs.
I've been trying to tell everyone how much The Sword rock but no one seems to listen. Glad you dug them.
Too bad about Metallica, though.
