Let me start with an admission: I don't like nearly all the metal that I've heard. I'm not a metal guitarist, and my main musical interest is rock. I grew up on 90's Metallica, and didn't discover the early albums until several years later. Lately, I've found myself on an 80's Metallica kick, and I've found a new appreciation for this band (in its old form) - Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets in particular.
One of my biggest dislikes about most metal is the rigidity of the songwriting, riffs sounding like rehashes of other riffs that I have already heard a million times before in various incarnations, accompanied by stiff, sterile drumming, completely devoid of any imagination or variation. You could argue that these characteristics are present in old Metallica, too, and I might even concede a little bit - most of the songs are in the key of E, the riffs are similar (melodic minor, pentatonic), Lars is a fairly simple drummer - but somehow the songs display a distinct personality, an attitude and style. They just WORK.
Anyhow, I want more, but I only want the good stuff. So where do I go from here?
Any excuse to post SYL.
