I love albums that can be a challenge to find, or albums that I may have to explain because the band is just plain obscure. They are interesting talking pieces and are just cool to see on the shelf. Every album has a story, so if you know a bit of it, post that too!
The first block of cool CDs is really a short history of the German label Prophecy Productions
Nox Mortis - Im Schatten des Hasses
Nox Mortis - 7 Lies
Nox Mortis is a band that seems pretty unknown outside of Thuringia, Germany. At least I have not met another fan. "Im Schatten des Hasses" was one of the first albums to be released on Prophecy shortly after Empyrium's "A Wintersunset" came out. Tobias Shoenemann (A.K.A Konstanz) was the singer of Nox Mortis, and it was produced by Markus Stock (of Empyrium, and virtually the founder of Prophecy). 7 Lies is on my list of all time favorite albums.
Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives - Nox Mortis
Next up is Ewigheim....they aren't very known in the U.S. I think they are at least fairly popular in their native Germany. They are another Prophecy Productions band. Tobias Shoenemann was the vocalist for this two-man band that also included Ronny Fimmel from Eisregen (another awesome band).
Ewigheim - Mord Nicht Ohne Grund
Ewigheim - Heimwege
I love them!
Now we fast foward to the present day and talk about The Vision Bleak. I am assuming that this band is not very obscure anymore because I think they have had some international success...but not many people have this....
The Vision Bleak - Songs of Good Taste (signed by Tobias Shoenemann and Markus Stock)
The Vision Bleak is what Markus and Tobias are doing now, and they are a metal act with themes inspired by Lovecraftian horror..but..."Songs of Good Taste" is nothing like this. It is closer to Empyrium. A highlight on the disc is a cover of The Moody Blues' "Nights in White Satin"
Okay...moving away from that one record label...
Katatonia - discouraged ones/brave murder day
This is a 2 CD set I found on eBay, and as far as I know it was only released to the Australian market. "Distributed by Shock Records under exclusive license from Century Media". The albums themselves are not obscure at all...but this particular package is.
