Yep, we are using an Axe II into the power section of a 5150 III and out to the Mesa cab for the main rhythm tone. We tried a hell of a lot of variations including Axe II direct and entirely "real" amps and found this setup to be the best fit for what we're after here.
As pointed out, Misha uses Cubase and I use Logic, but we are recording at Oceanic Studios which has a PT HD rig. The studio owner Taylor Larson is engineering and mixing the record so neither Misha nor I have much to do with the DAW work.

No pressure on the engineer to outdo both Nolly and Misha at the same time.

I thought the reason you went over was to record their album Nolly?
So are you tracking all the bass now?

Nah, I'm co-producing the album. I've tracked a few of the basslines but Misha is doing most of the bass tracking since he knows the riffs much better than anyone else.

Ahh sorry about that should had been more specific. I was just wondering what to their ears did they like about using that cab versus any other cab they had tried out.

Isn't that similar to what you and RSF did for your rhythm setup up but by reamping? What have you felt is better for using this setup for primary rhythm, rather than just the impulses in the Axe-Fx for the leads or the clean layers?

It actually isnt so much about the AxeII sounding better or worse direct. We actually had a pretty cool direct tone that im sure if we had tweaked to fit the mix would have worked perfectly. But Nolly and I had this general concept of doing something unique and "unrepeatable" for this album.
We figured if we were in the studio we might as well experiment with every option that we are not usually afforded and see what comes out.
The AxeII through the EVH and Mesa cab actually sounded a little weird at first, but with some careful tweaking we actually got it to sound not only incredible, but absolutely unique and in a sense "unrepeatable" which to us, of course, is awesome!

Taylor and I have both tried miking a TON of cabinets at his studio over the years. Paradoxically, my favorite live and "in the room" cabs ended up being very mediocre sounding when miked up. And the Mesa oversized cab may be one of my least favorite cabs to actually run an amp through, i actually think it sounds pretty horrendous in the room. But it is absolutely the best sounding cab when you mic it up.

I love the Axe-FX to death, but to my ears there is still something lacking in realism even with the II when compared with a real mic'd cab - an immediacy to the way the notes pop out and a certain very specific harmonic richness. While it's possible to tweak the hell out of the Axe and get close, I prefer to use a mic'd cab when circumstances allow. In this case we were able to get the an amp voicing and response that suited the Periphery sound from the Axe II, but with the realism and vibrancy that mic'ing up a cab gives.

For RSF there was no Axe-FX involved, it was a boosted 5150III into Mills and Orange cabs.

Wow awesome (I thought the whole album Axe-Fx but reamped, if that makes any sense).

What mics did you use when you recorded the 5150 3?

If anyone has any prayer requests, need to talk, or questions about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Feel free to message me.

God Bless, Venator
