Opeth's best album, bar none, hands down, and arguably one of the best albums released this decade. The guitar tones are amazing. The drumming is amazing. Mikaels vocals are amazing. The synth bits are amazing. The offbeat/prog bits are amazing. All the HEAVY HEAVY to subtle latin grooves several times in the course of the same song is just chilling and surreal. Beneath the Mire, Baying of the Hounds, and Harlequin Forest are also some of the most underrated songs of all time.
Lopez is just a beast on this album...he's such a versatile drummer. He made the band, IMO, because he could slow down and clean up his drumming-he really made the softer bits of Opeth more enjoyable. The new drummer is fantastic and very skilled, no doubt, but he lacks that slow, groovy feeling that Lopez had.
But anyway...if you aren't into Opeth or haven't picked up this album yet, don't even hesitate...it's fucking righteous.
Pretty damn tasty album for sure. Although Opeth albums are way above par in general, my favorite album of all time remains "Still Life."
