Thanks, that’s a interesting lesson.. so first you need to build a list of fans and THEN release your music. Now if only I knew how to find people to be fans of my music before that happens lol.

Thanks for the other replies too. I am aware that it’s an unusual career path to say the least. However maybe it’s easier if I moved to a bigger city with more musicians and people.

Problem is, there's more competition in bigger cities to go with the greater opportunities. You have to rise above that.

Too much focus leads to tunnel vision
Too much faith leads to religion
Too much knowledge leads to confusion
Too many guitar lessons lead to jazz-fusion

You absolutely will have to release a lot of music for free before anyone will start paying for it. You'll most likely sell your first t-shirt before someone gives you money for your recorded music. Here's how you'll make money, in the order that it'll happen, if it happens:

Playing live

Selling merch

Selling music

My cousin is a singer in Nashville, and she is always talking about how if you want to make a good living in music, you need to keep track of your audience/fans so you can contact them at any time. My family has always been musical so I have sat in on many conversations about this kind of stuff.
Anyway, my cousin is no millionaire, but she makes good enough money to live, have a car etc. so I'd say it's possible if you know what you are doing.

I write my own songs too (although its power metal stuff) but I'm still in school so I don’t do it for real yet until after I graduate. I recently typed ‘make money in music’ into google and found this article that talks about this kind of thing as well Make Money In Music

Its funny you mention that link.
Yeah I had a friend who was a member in the music careers program from Tom hess
in that article. He actually quit his regular job to start touring with his
band. I was thinking about checking it out.
