What's with all these sites trying to make you pay for tabs?

Lol I do but it doesn't stop them. There actually videos embedded on the tab page that just randomly starts playing. No pause or stop either. I think its like $3 a month or something so I'm not really losing sleep

QFT I think I have over 60 books. It was the fastest way to learn songs. And even if they weren't 100% accurate all the time, you could figure it what was wrong, and how to make it right

Anyone else still got 3.47 million old issues of GuitarOne/GuitarWorld/GuitarWhateveritisnow kicking around in their music collection?

Each of those things had 5-8 high quality tabs of popular and classic songs and they always explained how to get the tone/tuning/effects and threw in little tidbits of band/song history to boot. I learned a lot from those things.

Making metal every night and day.

I did for quite a while. But the Guitar World stack was getting out of control after all those years. So then I tried to just strip the lessons and tabs out. Then that turned into a giant shit pile that lives under my bed that never gets used. There is a lot of good stuff in there but it's just wasted at this point. I'm in the habit of full digital now that I put up a touchscreen to run the AXEII, metronome, DVDs, Guitar Pro etc.

You must be doing it wrong. I never get ads on UG. You can add adds and frames to the filter, btw.

^This. Hell, I don't do anything special and have no problems using it. If they have to throw a few ads at me so I can download free GP tabs then so be it.

I get tabs from Ultimate guitar all the time and never have to pay for them or see too many ads. I usually ignore all their own stuff and go straight for the download, I use tuxguitar to play any GP or powertab files. It's basically a free guitar pro program. I tend to over rely on tabs but I can figure things out by ear most of the time if I have to.
I do have a few books and a few of them are awful but some are very good transcriptions of the albums. I've got a nice stack of mags from a few years ago too but there was usually only 1 or 2 songs in each that I'd even think of learning.
