I remember back in the day tab was free and it was all .txt files.

Now there is all this $2.99/mo crap and special software and crap that you need. Srsly? Just host the .txt file.

Yea I was getting pissed off with ultimate guitar. All these video ads kept coming up. I'm too hopeless to tab by ear so I just signed up. Also, I can't access Led Zeppelin tabs. It says they can't be accessed from my region. I had to install an ip hider which is a real hassle.

The music publishers trying to get their cut. Sure, the tabs are fan created, but the songs are owned by someone (usually not the writer or performer, but, y'know...).

Whether or not it's justified is up for debate. Personally, if it's fan created and no one's making money, keep it free and keep legal stuff out. People will still pay money for high quality, official tab books, from the artist, in the rare cases where they're available. Until then, sharing home made tabs is just like showing someone how to play it face to face.

It's also probably an issue of site upkeep. I remember my favorite site back in the day had to shut down because they couldn't pay for the bandwidth costs.

Do you know what time it is? It's time to FARK SHEET ARRRRRP!!

Back in the day if you wanted tab you had to write it yourself while walking uphill in the snow while barefoot.

I remember when Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine first came out HOLY SHIT TABS FOR ENTIRE SONGS

I used to use tabs out of magazines all the time, and getting tab books was awesome. If anything, online tabs have gotten better. It's nice having a well made Guitar Pro file with the whole damned song arrangement. And paying a few bucks for a subscription? If I relied on internet tabs that much...well...why not pay for the hard work of the tab creators and the guys who made and run the website? It's really not a lot of money coming from your pocket and probably just covers part of the hosting fees
