Someone on the ShawnLane forum a long time ago posted about meeting him at a party once...
The story went something like; Shawn was giving a chap recommendations for movies. Shawn was a huge film buff. Anyway, the guy posted a pic on the forum of this list(s) Shawn had jotted down...there were two columns, and the story was that Shawn wrote the movie lists using both hands at the same time...I dont know who held the paper down, but I want to believe this story so don't naysay. haha.
It was said he could also sign his name and write his phone # at the same time...creepazoid.
My favorite guitarist, probably my favorite musician. Someone needed to just chain him to Jonas Hellborg and a recording console and let them just go at it forever.
Unlike most of us who tend to play pre-rehearsed "note blocks" or licks when we improvise, Shawn pretty much played a beautiful stream of consciousness. You can break apart any single run of his and find it to be musical at any speed. He was able to actually think at that speed.
The guy was just a true genius. We are just lucky he chose guitar. Had he not, I guarantee there would be some engineering forum talking about shawn lane, or some art forum, or really any pursuit he would have chosen.
here is an amazing improvisation he did at a bookstore in Kolkata, India. check out the indian classical-ish intro
