I've been jamming to some of VM's stuff lately, and while I think some of the high notes get a bit too shrilly/screechy, he's definitely a contendor for the "holy shit that lead tone" in my books

Or maybe it just works well with the stuff he writes and how insane it is

I know this an advert for the Premium line, but it really sold me on wanting a Mark V... for a practice amp. heh

You wouldn't guess from my username but I really do like Sfogli's playing. Utterly tasteful player with chops and style! His guitar-faces are a picture too

I very nearly bought one of the HVV Premiums on the strength of this vid but the wife did a very good impression of this dude ->

Cheers,

Neil

I'm so fucking close to buying that HVV at the moment (they're £560 on Thomann if that'll ease your wife some). I really don't need another basswood Ibanez, and the pickup config would be a nightmare for me, but it's just a very pretty guitar.

The Maze - Vinnie Moore - YouTube
That's a great album that I haven't listened to in some time. Also, IIRC, that album is almost all Recto. And people say Rectos can't do good lead tones...

I had assumed it was a Marshall since I thought thats what he had used for a while and any of the stuff Ive watched recently has had him using a Marshall backline or it was one of the ENGLs he uses as an endorsee but a Recto for that? God damn.

Yeah, that Petrucci style one, his guitar faces own. At best I look like I've been paralyzed, at worst I look like I'm extremely autistic.

It's not on his site anymore so I had to get a little help from WayBack, but...

Mesa Boogie Amplifier

Quote:
Mesa Boogie - Dual Rectifier

This head was used a whole lot on The Maze. It has tons of "lows" and a lot of "top" that allows it to cut through a mix. It has a thick tone. Sometimes you have to be careful because there can be so much low end that it rattles the speakers--especially with cleaner tones. I tend to set the gain at around 7 as it gets a little fuzzy at 9 or 10.

The orange channel gets a great clean tone and a great half-clean/half-distorted sound.

Here are my preferred settings: Master 2, Presence 4, Bass 3, Middle 4, Treble 6, Gain 7, Tube Bias - EL34, Power Switch - Bold, Rectifier Select - Normal (vacuum tubes), Channel Style Select - Red to Vintage.
Trust me, as a guy who's (shockingly, haha) spent much of the last couple weeks tracking a Recto... that sounds a LOT like a Rectifier.

EDIT - Fuck it. I told myself I wouldn't go around posting teaser clips and whatnot for my album, but I already posted a video for this one so here's a 0:17 clip of the chorus from the actual album tracks. SUPER rough mix here, but while my tone is a lot wetter and smoother than his (and also a bridge JB rather than whatever neck pickup the opening to The Maze sounds like) you can sort of see how they're from very similar amps:

Drums are obviously a placeholder.
