Hoeks is a cool but small place. It's right on 6th st in Austin which is dead set in the middle of all the craziness of SXSW. For the past couple of years, they hold what's basically the lineup of all the small metal bands from around Austin/San Antonio area. This year had 6 days scheduled with ~11 bands each day. It's always free. All the bands that played got free pizza and beer.
Unfortunately, it was shut down last night...the first night. My band was supposed to play tonight.
What happened? Hoeks paid to renew their live music license. The check was cashed but they haven't gotten the permit yet. Because police had to shut down the venue last night, Hoeks was also fined $500.
The event organizer is trying to find another place for the remaining nights. They may have found another place for tonight, but they've been scrambling about it since. It sucks for Hoeks since they always have supported the local metal scene. At least they can stay open for pizza. Hopefully they can still generate some revenue for pizza sales during SXSW.
