So, I've been thinking about something I've seen numerous times, here and other places: bands, or members of bands, asking for band contest votes, Facebook "likes", etc.
In the past, whenever I'd see that kind of request posted by a regular forum member, I usually wouldn't hesitate to help out, provided it wasn't too much of a hassle (e.g. having to sign up somewhere).
Here's an honest question: why should I "like" your Facebook page? Why should I vote for your band? Sure, I may like you as a person (in the internet sense, which really means that I like the textual content that you post), but what does that have to do with your music? Maybe there's a band in the contest that I not only like more, but which unambiguously did a better job than you.
Whenever I see somebody asking for votes/likes now, I get the feeling that there's a hidden admission of failure attached, that they're not confident enough in their music to let it stand on its own merits. If that's the case, then do better! Win me over, and I'll be happy to vote for and "like" you a thousand times over, without having been asked to do so.
Am I way off? Tell me what you think.
