Oh man, I really liked Orphaned Land when I first heard Mabool or whatever back in 2008ish, but the "generic middle eastern elements combined with metal" style has been so overdone at this point I can't take it even when it's well done.
I mean, it's not like OL isn't great at it. But there are like 800 extreme metal bands doing this shit right now and it is just way oversaturated. Back in 2004ish when Nile and Behemoth were amongst the only ones doing the Middle Easternish stuff it was awesome, but I think everyone needs to give it a rest for a little while.
I mean, I get it's the "traditional instrumentation of your people" and whatever, but everyone is just trying to take things too fast. People need to let metal just be metal. It's not just the Middle Eastern stuff either. There is now a massive amount of same-y sounding Slavic Folk stuff and Oriental stuff out there too. Even if it came to a full halt this very moment it will probably be another decade before this stuff sounds fresh again.
