I was wondering if there some people who know Montreal well on here and might share a bit about the music scene there.
I am particularly interested in jazz and fusion and of course know the jazz festival but wondered if anyone had in depth info on what the scene is like year round including jazz and fusion as well as other genres (also Francophone music, prog and metal etc). Additionally, what are the music shops like and life in general musically? Any players who are well considered who may not be known outside of the city?
There doesn't seem to be anyplace with a reasonably complete music calendar online as several papers have closed in recent years but I look forward to any helpful hints
In a nutshell, I've been in Montreal for the last 20 years. Unfortunately, I've been out of the "scene" for a couple of years now. I'm not that young anymore.
But still, I still work in the music / television industry. There's always been a lot of music (all styles) in Montreal all year round. I see a lot of it. It's kinda like NY divided by 10. LOTS of bands.
There's been a lot of attention to the MTL music scene lately because of the "Arcade Fire" wave...
There's a spotlight right now on what's is going on here because of that, but I'd say it's more on the "alternative" side. But there's always been a LOT of metal forged in Quebec and jazz, beside the festival, has become a year-round thing. I'd say Montreal is a very vivid city, music wise.
Here's some links for venues in MTL.
http://voir.ca/ in french but you can use Google translate lol
List of every venue in town, if you want to hunt for their websites. Tons of stuff.
Also, there's 2-3 great music shops in MTL, wich have anything you might need.
Feel free to ask any questions!
