Thought I'd start doing a segment called "Gig Review" for shows you guys may or may not give a fuck about. I'll try not to post my crappy pop punk shows here.
Last night, I took my father to see The Cult!
The night was filled with lots of guitar solos, lots of riffs, many old drunk people, and some uptight old people in button down shirts. I say these last few statements because I was the only person under 40 in the room, and the only person X'd up lol (Still 20).
"The Cult come on when The Cult want to fucking come on."
In typical rock star fashion, The Cult played when they wanted. Doors were at 7pm, and it was a snow storm here in Buffalo. They were supposed to start at 8:30, but being rock stars and all didn't come on till about 9:15. I'm totally not used to these type of shows, as I see many local shows and not so many "bigger" acts.
They opened with "Wildflower", which is solidly energetic. I felt like they were still warming up three or four songs into the set though. They were playing solid, but the energy in the room was lacking at first. This is typical though I'd imagine, having no opener.
Billy Duffy has one sweet live guitar tone.
Those old Marshall's, and a Vox cab really sound great. At one point, he played a Gretsch (full bigbsy style) through an insane wah pedal. This is the first time that I've felt I enjoyed the presence of a wah pedal. Metallica would be proud.
Lots of killer riffs. The Cult may not be everyone's cup of tea, and I totally get that. I really dig Duffy's riffs and tone though.
Another point, lots of solos. There was not a single song that didn't have one. I believe it was a 22 song set, and there were 25 solos or so.
Moving on to the rest of the members. Vocals were pretty solid, nothing special but nothing wrong there. Drums and other guitarist were pretty solid too. I thought the bassist had some cool lines, and his tone filled in nicely behind the guitars. Definitely notice that there was a super cool bass line cutting through, and that's something you just don't get with every band.
Time to scour YouTube for some clips of this tour:

I've always dug Billy Duffy's style and not too many guys can rock a White falcon in rock and look badass doing it. And it's a shame people from our generation don't know about this band and others like them.
