I hadn't heard of these guys until Ben posted the link to their contest. I didn't listen to any of their songs and just went for it over the track. I thought this track sounded a lot like Cynic, so I went for a fusiony legato style. When I was about 3/4's of the way through writing this solo I took a listen to the original track. Turns out the guitarist goes for a pretty similar approach.
I did find this a little difficult to write for. It's the same three chords repeated, and the timing is all a little nebulous. It's 4/4, but played as 3/4 and 5/4, and each chord begins an 8th triplet before the barline. It lacked a distinct groove, I thought. And, by just repeating it four times, I was finding it difficult not to get stale. But it is a very nice sequence to just free-time over, that's for sure. The key change is lovely.
Anyway, here's my humble attempt at it. I made a mistake on my favourite phrase that I came up with (0:49), slid one fret too short. Bit bummed out about that, but the rest of the take was good, and this was otherwise the best take. This was the last of 6 takes, and my left hand was cramping up, so I'm calling it a draw.

Tried to have a go at this, but they just happened to choose the most difficult section of the entire album as the piece to solo over.
