so i've been thinking about this lately and trying to find musicians who really dabble in all kinds of different music even if their primary mode of showing their skills and songwriting is through metal.
of course the most obvious example is devin townsend. i'll admit i have lost interest in SYL(although the band played a huge part in helping me appreciate more extreme forms of music) i can't help but admire and respect devin for just doing things he most enjoys. he simply does what he feels he wants to do without trying to necessarily appease a certain(SYL) crowd.
i guess another example would be alex skolnick who plays jazz and other kinds of music alongside being a monster thrash guitarist.
so keeping that in mind, are there any devin townsends in thrash/death/black/prog? i mean is(are) there a death metal musician(s) who also make larry and his flask style music or are their any prog metal guitarists who are moonlighting as talented pop rock musician where the focus is not on showing of your awesome sweep picking skills and how many time signatures you can cram into your songs but instead about simply having a good time, a thrash drummer who is also an electronic musician. anything really. but i'm mostly looking for people who have extreme variations in their styles of music choice and not just "hey i play in this death metal band but now i play in a progressive thrash band".
basically people who look beyond just maintaining an image/status quo(nothing wrong with this though as long as you like it) and simply do what they feel like while still maybe catering to their initial and primary fanbase in metal.
On the contrary are there any non-metal musicians who have surprised you with an interest or skill in some form of metal genre?
Ihsahn would be a guy who breaks the mold in Black Metal.
