Paul Gilbert never stuck out to me when I was younger. He always gets lumped in with guys like Vai and Satch, and his playing isn't nearly as weird or instantly recognizable as them.
A while back I really listened to him and realized that his playing isn't that ridiculous, it's just tasteful and dead-on perfect. I'm not really into Vai and Satch, but I really like Paul's stuff. He rips and is crazy accurate, but still listenable.
Guys like Gilbert (and Nathan East) blow me away with their absolute mastery of the fretboard and being able to nail absolutely perfect notes, feel and phrasing every single time.
Yeah, Paul Gilbert just has a complete mastery of the instrument. He's a joy to watch and listen to as it is a musician being 100% comfortable and at home with the intrument. And you can tell he always really enjoys it too, which just makes it all the better.
When I went to his guitar camp in july, he didnt shred once during the week. We would have jam sessions with everyone just repeating a chord and he would always play something new. He played new licks for 2 hours straight. It was pretty awesome.
Even that little evil bastard in your avatar is clapping along!
