Yea, same here but while I was listening it also made me realise this is a perfect example of guitar tone coming from the player. His style of playing makes it instantly recognisable as being Metallica even though the tone is pretty shitty.
Post-St.Anger, definitely. Beforehand.. eh... not so much. I always thought he came off as an arrogant tool until he got clean and got therapy etc. There's definitely a night and day difference from before/after if you go back and watch some old stuff.
It's funny how I can still be so easily impressed by the guy who was once something like my hero in teenage years. He is just sitting there, jamming some riffs, talking about stuff we've already heard often enough....and I enjoy it, very much.
Kirks same interview in that series is horrible. Guy kinda comes off as a douche. Also, very little playing, which was expected. They probably didnt have a wah handy.
Was a great interview for Hetfield. He made some decisions early in life that helped him reach his goal. And I like his tone. Guys like this will not be around forever. Enjoy em now. :metal:
He's become an exceedingly weird person, I absolutely do not get what's going on with him. Any interview with him in the last few years has just been so awkward and clumsy. He stutters like fuck, has weird mannerisms, can't play guitar for shit... He's not the same guy.
I'd love to hear a solo album from James. He sounds great here without Lars, and unchained from the expectations that come from Metallica, I could see some really passionate and beautiful music coming from him.
"but not something that's going give you ear fatigue after leaving the concert"
Oh, you mean like after a Metallica concert because it's the most unbearably loud grindy experience of all time?
Gojira plays: Hmm, this is about the perfect volume for a concert. I'm glad I have ear plugs
Lamb of God plays next: You know, this is really a bit too loud. How is this enjoyable? I'm really glad I have ear plugs.
Metallica finally plays: Hmm, what is this odd slurry running down my neck? Oh, it's a mixture of Hearo foam, blood, and brain tissue.
I always assumed Hetfield to be a dick, but man, he really spoke to me here. Now listening to old Metallica. It seems like Kirk was interviewed the morning after he was abducted by aliens.
I was taking a drag on my vape as I read this and ended up laughing and blowing all the vapor through my nose very forcefully. Hurt like a bitch. Fuck you.
After going from the Kirk one to this, it's really eye-opening. James has still definitely got his chops although the tone wasn't my thing. The way he articulated on what he wanted from his tone was far above what I expected it to be since I've seen a good chunk of people seem to fumble for words to grasp what they actually wanted from their own
