Judging by he cadences it looks like he's familiar with playing, I think the band is just trying to be all "look how different we are" and are failing miserably at it, and I think the guitarist listened to too much Ravi Shankar.

Free Jazz hipsters are roaring back. I've seen a few of these noisenerd bands recently (the last few years), and they are uniformly terrible - and I love skronky, atonal bullshit.

Derek Bailey is a legit genius (his book "Improvisation" is incredible), and almost completely unlistenable. As are most of these players who actually know what they're doing. If you stick with it (why on Satan's green earth would you??), you begin to get the language. But don't, because it really is pretentious and wrong.

I like to invite new friends over, put this on and then stare at them.

Thing is that Derek, Pat, and Cecil can play consonant music at the highest level as well. They are legitimately excellent musicians exploring the theoretical boundaries of music and sound. Not some fuck hole trying to be weird to pull stoned chicks who think a complete lack of hygiene is a political statement.

The headstock tattoo on his head is pretty... ironic.
