How to introduce your friends to metal

Okay I posted a thread about planning on seeing Meshuggah as my foray back into metal and it got me thinking on a tangent.

When introducing your friends to metal do you start with a certain genre? Do you start with "gateway" bands? Do you start with what you are currently listening to? Do you show them your all time favourites? Do you suggest albums or tracks? For specific bands do you go with their current material, or their first or what you think is their best work?

The reason I ask this is that I literally have been in a hole for about 20 years with regards to metal and having felt the urge to return I find the music landscape alien and have no idea where to start.

To me, metal is something that you either get...or you don't. I don't think there are any "safe" bands to lure someone in with (aside from radio rock, which most of us don't consider metal anyway). Just play them what you like and see how they react.

I think it depends on what they're most likely to latch onto. For example, someone who likes awesome girl singers might enjoy a band like Within Temptation. If they like really good melodies and hooks and some complexity, maybe they'd like Karnivool. If they like epicness, maybe they like Blind Guardian or Symphony X. I think finding a "backdoor" to their tastes like that is a good way to introduce something new. It's like when people who don't like vegetables have to start out by covering them in cheese

I dont think wen someone first starts listening to metal they would like cannibal corpse. They sorta have to listen to hard rock and just search for something heavier
