The same guitar riff played through an entire song layered and layered and layered and layered with tons of noise. Being loud and noisy does not equal "heavy" in my personal opinion.
So many people told me "City" was a masterpiece for so long that I checked it out and couldn't understand how such a monumentally mediocre album could be so respected. I couldn't understand how talent Devin was at that point because the music was pretty horrific in my opinion. The last two SYL albums were quite a bit better, but still not at all what I'd consider "good."
In fact, it took me a while to get into Devin Townsend because I just really didn't like Strapping Young Lad and assumed his solo stuff would sound the same way. Of course, it sounded nothing remotely like Strapping Young Lad and I found myself liking just about every album he's put out (I thought Ghost was kind of boring, though).
