Hi guys -
After planning and prep for months, I started a local online metal magazine in OKC this last week.
I'm attending shows, reporting, listing gigs (for free - bands and venues don't pay), etc., blah blah. I write as part of my living and I covered music and concerts when I was a kid. It's been a while, though.
Anyway, one show I went to was goddamn spectacular. The headliners killed it and the opening band played their first show and were really pretty good. It was no problem writing that piece.
Another show ended up short and the headliners had issues with tech gremlins, I think. They played, but I don't think it was their best show and at the end, they seemed frustrated and sort of blew the audience off. Seemed like they couldn't wait to get out of there.
Here's the question - as musicians and possibly as members of a band, would you rather hear an honest opinion (whether you give a shit about the guy who's giving it or not) or some sugar-coated pablum?
I'm headed to two other events in the next week.
If you write the truth, people will want to read your stuff.
