Since I have had time to digest this album and I can finally make a post about it. Haha.
I think the new album is pretty great! I would say it's fairly different compared to the first album, however it still retains what The Winery Dogs brought on the first album. There are still amazing choruses, amazing musicianship and most importantly, songs that will last.
"Oblivion" - "Kicks you in the face" Rock/Metal song that captures the bands virtuosity. Love it.
"Captain Love" - It's like AC/DC & TWD had a child together. It's a funny & straight-forward Rock N' Roll song. Portnoy said in a interview he always wanted a "pole-dancing song." This song is pretty great. I can see a lot of you guys loving this track.
"Hot Streak" - I have heard mixed reviews from people. Some are not convinced with this song. I like this song because it paints the picture to me of a group of guys playing poker and the "Narrator" so to speak is a confident player who basically lays it down hard on everyone. I love this song personally.
"How Long" - Has a progressive rock beginning to it with Billy throwing down hard on the bass. The thing I love about this song the most is the amazing chorus that Kotzen lays down and the transitions throughout are great.
"Empire" - This song has more of a "disco" feel to it. I love the transitions throughout this song, Billy & Portnoy hold this song down in the pocket pretty hard. Richie has a featured solo with playing some slide. Pretty cool.
"Fire" - I love, love this song. It's just an acoustic ballad with layers. Beautiful & well written. Richie owns this song front to back.
"Ghost Town" - This song is fairly different compared to the first album. It has the hard rock vibe, however it has an alternative "ghost-like" sound. To me I see an big empty highway with a foggy haze upon entering this "Ghost Town." It's sounds Big.
"The Bridge" - I just love this song. Everything about it is great from front to back. The Chorus is really what sells to me more than anything else. Richie's solo is nuts too.
"War Machine" - This track grooves hard. Portnoy is setting the tone for this track. There is an acoustic transition within the song with a harmonized electric guitar melody over and that reminds of Iron Maiden. Cool song as well.
"Spiral" - It is the "oddest" song out of all the songs from The Winery Dogs songs. Bass however, creates the background for it and it's really cool what he is doing with the bass in the background. It's a cool song but it is probably my "least" favorite song. I could see a lot of people loving it at the same time.
"The Devil You Know" - This is just another awesome rock song. Nothing more. It just slays. "Yeah, I'm just the Devil you Know."
"Think it Over" - Arguably the best song on the album. I hope you're ready for some Soul & Rock n' Roll because you are about to get it. The whole band shines on this track.
"The Lamb" - We about to go to Church on this song. Gospel & Rock N' Roll. I love this song quite a bit as well. The synth on this album is sick and Billy's solo is super-rad.
These last two tracks you can compare to "Regret" on the first album.
Overall: I think the new album is great! The Chorus's, Musicianship & Songs are golden. I really, really, admire that they all tried something different instead of trying to write the album as before. Which is why I really like this album from that aspect. However, I still love the first album a lot more. Which is fine. Richie basically wrote that whole album anyway, this in a sense is like the first album they wrote completely as a "band" and it's pretty great. Different & Exciting. I look forward to see how they continue with the third album. More and More as I listen to this album I fall more in love with it. I love how they have retained the Soul & Gospel aspect from Richie. Because it separates them completely from everyone else. Portnoy does what he does and is always incredible at it. Billy still remains inventive and I love that. Check some of the songs out guys!
