Sepultura wouldn't have improved with or without Max. Just listen to Chaos AD and Roots, two really overrated albums.

Chaos AD made me sad. I had gotten into Sepultura listening to Arise back to back non stop and Chaos was just goddamn terrible. Roots just made them sound like they forgot how to play.

Roots was decent for what it was. I was at the right age to appreciate it though being a young teenager who was into Nu Metal it was one of the heavier albums that came out of that scene and for me, shat on the likes of slipknot and other 'in' bands. The same went for the post split sepultura although there isnt an ablum of theirs that I ever liked all the way through.

These days I'll listen to Arise and BTR every so often and cant think of the last time id have put on any of the others. They pale in comparison. I wouldnt say Roots and Chaos AD are shit albums they were just products of that period which I enjoyed at the time.

For what its worth id much rather listen to Against than anything that Max put out with Soulfly.

I find this humorous considering how crappy Soulfly is.

Who cares, everything went to shit after Chaos AD anyway (forgive me, I was 12 when this came out, heard it first time with 13 and it hit the right spot).
At the end of the day I only give a shit for 5 seconds because I think about how I used to like this band. The only thing I would give a shit about is the original lineup touring together.

(BUT - this Cavalera Conspiracy record shits on everything post-Chaos Sepultura have ever done.)

This was my basic thought before even reading the article.
Yes, old Sepultura is unbelievably savage, instant metal classics, but towards the end of Max leaving it was going to shit anyway. Roots just sounded like a proto-Soulfly, so to say that was the rest of the band's fault is obvious horseshit

Citing anything after Arise as the last good album by Sepultura is like citing Load as the last good Metallica album.

I'm not hipster enough to enjoy Morbid Visions, but Schizophrenia and BTR are clearly their best, and Arise is a pretty excellent album (it does hint at what was to come in a few spots, though), but everything after that is garbage to me.
