I threw this on while driving home, more or less at random tongiht (I think the rationale was that I realized I wasn't quite in a The Hold Steady mood right before I hit play, and they were nearby). Man, what an album... It's been a while since I've played it, and even longer since I really listened to it, and it was surprising just how much this disc has influenced me, from the huge "wall of sound" layered guitars playing odd, slightly dissonant voicings that open "Little Dipper" to the feedback/atonal guitar solo of "The Pod" and the way the outro fades out leaving only an acoustic (which I've blatantly ripped off, lol) to some of the octave/added 3rd stuff in "Stars"... I was going through track by track and thinking, "Oh, that's something I've picked up and used in a song" while listening.
And it's just a bunch of great tunes, too - "Stars" is still one of the best 90's hard rock tunes, IMO.
wow. i so forgot about this album. i freakin loved it back when i was in high school. thanks, now i gotta go find a copy to listen to! i didnt even think anyone else really liked them, lol.
